A keen lover of mythology and the macabre, Madeleine’s nomadic upbringing has brought her in contact with a wide collection of vibrant cultures and gruesome folklore from across the world, which has influenced her writing greatly. In particular, she is fascinated by faeries, and can be heard talking about them a little more than is usually considered appropriate.

This interest in faeries was incited by Madeleine’s mother who, one day, unwittingly implored her to ‘write something nice for a change, without blood, death, or war.” Channeling those childhood memories of flower-fairy sticker-books and Tinkerbell costumes, she suggested Madeleine write about ‘faeries or something’. A little research later, and this request birthed the first draft of The Sons of Thestian, a the subsequent start of The Harmatia Cycle, a series all about blood, death and war. Faeries, as it turns out – much to Madeleine’s delight – are actually pretty horrible.

When Madeleine isn’t writing or teaching, she enjoys composing music, drawing, and practising Washinkai Karate, for which she is a 1st Dan Black Belt. She currently splits her time between her apartment in Winchester and her family home in Horsham, where she lives in the middle of a dragon forest.
